Prepare to embark on an odyssey through the profound essence of Latin Jazz. Join the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Latino for an unforgettable evening of Latin Jazz at the National Museum of Natural History’s Baird Auditorium on April 19th at 7:00 pm. Enjoy award-winning, Cuban-born, drummer, producer, and composer, Hugo Cruz and his band Caminos who have played at the Pittsburgh International Jazz Festival, Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Music Hall Oakland and others, followed by the consummate rhythms of seven-time Grammy-nominated percussionist John Santos, and his stellar sextet. This event is free and open to the public. Registration through Eventbrite encouraged.

7:30 PM - 8:30 PM: Hugo Cruz and Caminos

Hugo Cruz is a Cuban-born, award-winning, drummer, producer, and composer who studied music in percussion at the Instituto Superior de Arte/The University of Arts of Cuba. He uses music to communicate his experiences, culture, and to connect with people from all over the world. He has performed in South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, and the United States. Hugo is the leader of the group Caminos who fuse rhythms and melodies of Afro-Cuban, Cuban, and American music, in an original contemporary expression that honors traditional Cuban form.

8:30 PM - 10:00 PM: The John Santos Sextet

Seven-time Grammy-nominated percussionist, US Artists Fontanals Fellow, and 2013-2014 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, John Santos, is one of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today. His work has been recognized and supported by the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Smithsonian Institution, the California Arts Council, United States Artists, the Zellerbach Family Fund, the Fund for Folk Culture, the Ford Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlitt Foundation, the East Bay Community Foundation, the National Association of Latino Arts and Culture, the Creative Work Fund, and the City of Oakland. The City of San Francisco issued a mayoral proclamation declaring November 12, 2006 John Santos Day. He was featured prominently in the PBS American Masters documentary, Cachao: Uno Mas (2008), and is the subject of another documentary by Searchlight Films (Oakland, CA), which made its world premiere at the fabled South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas in March of 2022.
